The distinct privilege of every person who believes in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord is to publicly confess Him through baptism. This in no way adds to their salvation. That salvation was eternally secured at the infinite price of the blood of “the Lamb of God,” Jesus Christ. His death, burial, and resurrection ensure salvation for all who turn from their sin and trust in Him. Baptism then is a picture of the believer’s identity with Christ in the great events of His death, burial and resurrection. In baptism, the Christian boldly proclaims to the world that he is a new person in Jesus Christ; his old life is past and his new life is one of following his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4
