Security concerns prevent several of our missionaries from being listed on this page. Please contact the church office for more information.
Abraham, Jake and Julie
Jake served in Missions to India from 1996-98, while Julie participated in a Short-Term trip to Ecuador during that time. They were married here at Southwest in 1998, and were very active in our College and Career ministry.
From 2001 to 2008, Jake and Julie served with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) in Melbourne Australia, working to build university movements
for Christ. In June of 2008, they moved into a new role at the headquarters of CCC in Orlando, Florida. They provide leadership and resourcing
for the field ministries of CCC in South and Southeast Asia. CCC has over 3,000 full-time staff serving in those regions, from India to the Philippines.
Jake’s primary areas of focus on the team include campus ministry, church planting, movements among leaders of society and the impact of the Gospel
on culture and society.
Brown, Marshall and Cathryn
Marshall and Cathryn have been in the Czech Republic since 1989 and are directly sent out by Southwest. For years Marshall was directing the extensions
studies program at the Evangelical Theological Seminary, preparing pastors to accurately teach the Word of God. But in 2009 they began to see God lead
them to new opportunities of ministry and so began their new ministry path of church planting and development. They have been very involved in the
leadership of their local church, Marshall as an elder and often being able to preach, Cathryn in the Sunday school program and kids club and the kids in
leading worship and children’s ministry. They also have been involved in evangelistic camps that use English as a method to share the gospel to the Czech
community and discipleship camps directed to missionary children. Teams from Southwest have joined in this camp ministry. Marshall also has been
researching and writing a book about Jan (John) Blahoslav, who translated the Bible into Czech in the 16th century. He is to the Czechs what Wycliffe of
Tyndale is to English speakers. Many Czechs to not realize that his passion was for Christ, not the Czech language. Their prayer is that this work will witness
to God’s truth in the Czech Republic. The first chapter of the book has been published in a journal and Marshall is working on the completion.
Cheney, Don and Gretchen
Don and Gretchen joined Wycliffe Bible Translators as individuals in 1978. For Don, it was the fulfillment of a strong desire to translate the Scriptures.
Gretchen first served as an administrative assistant to the director in Guatemala City. They met in 1981, during Don’s monthly visits to the capital city.
The Cheneys were married at Southwest Bible in 1983. The next year they returned to the town of Santa Maria de Jesus and began work translating
the New Testament into the Cakchiquel (caulk-chee-KELL) language. The Cheneys praised the Lord for the completion of the entire New Testament
rough draft in 1998. This draft was revised, and a “back translation” completed, in July 1999. In all, the translation was a result of a ten-step process.
This required people outside the translation team to read the revised version. The finalized New Testament was dedicated and recorded during the
summer of 2007. They are now taking a new assignment with JAARS, the technical arm of Wycliffe. Don is working in the IT department with the goal
of helping to write tutorials and help files for some of the new software.
Corey, John and Jeanette
John and Jeanette
met at Prairie Bible Institute in Canada. After they married, God called them Ethiopia in 1965 with SIM. There, they shared the gospel for 13 years until the
Communist takeover in 1978, which forced them to leave the country. The Lord led them to Liberia, West Africa in 1979 for another 13 years. Once again
they had to evacuate. In 1993, John first visited Far East Russia with men from SBC. On that trip, John met some teachers vacationing near Vladivostok.
As he shared Christ, the Lord opened their hearts. Many more turned to God during that trip. It was from this simple beginning that Spassk Bible Church
began in 1994. Since then, John—along with others from SBC—has made many return trips to Russia. John and Jeanette have retired after 41 years with SIM.
They are now missionaries sent directly by SBC and John continues to disciple church leaders in Russia and Liberia and is active in promoting missions at Southwest.
Gordillo, Ted and Ticiana
Ted
and Ticiana met while serving on a missions project in Costa Rica. Since then, they desired to return to the mission field. Both Ted and Ticiana were very
involved in ministry at SBC and they are thankful for the teaching, friendships and fellowship here. In 2003, they joined Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC)
to serve in Melbourne, Australia, where there is a tremendous need for the Word of God to go out to over 200,000 university students. Their assignment is
dedicated primarily to the commencing and strengthening of campus ministries. Their vision is to: Win people to Christ through sharing the gospel, Build
them up in the understanding of God and His Word through discipleship, Train them to become spiritual leaders and to share their faith, and Send them out
into the world to do the same. Their current role is campus coordinators at Monash University. Ted also oversees the campus ministry and expansion of the
Southeast Region of Melbourne, which includes two other campuses, with the possibility of pioneering a third.
Henderson, John and Mary
John
and Mary joined staff with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) in 1978. They worked with the Athletes in Action (AIA) branch of CCC for eight years in Texas and
California, as well as participating in many AIA short-term mission trips. In 1986, they moved here so John could attend Western Seminary and they also started
attending SBC, where they became active servants. In 1989, they returned to CCC and spent the next eight years in New Zealand, working with students at
Auckland University and helping start Auckland Bible Church. From 1997-2003 they served in Budapest, Hungary, where John served as Staff Development
Coordinator for 18 countries in Eastern Europe, overseeing and training future ministry leaders for CCC. In 2003, John and Mary moved back to the US due
to Mary’s health. John continues to serve as Staff & Leader Development Coordinator for CCC in Eastern Europe and Russia, and makes frequent visits here
to encourage and develop ministry at SBC.
Lau, Kendrick and Alicia
The Lord
brought Kendrick and Alicia together while Kendrick was in a family practice residency program and Alicia was working as an intensive care nurse (ICU).
While they were here at Southwest, the Laus were actively involved in ministry. Kendrick led a Home Bible Study and Alicia was a small group leader in
the ladies’ Bible study. In 1991, Kendrick spent a year at Galmi Hospital as a medical student. After completing his family practice residency training, he and
Alicia returned to Galmi for a 6-month short-term trip, which confirmed the Lord’s call for them to return to Niger. Since completing Bible training at Multnomah
Biblical Seminary and 15 months of French language study in France, the Laus have been serving as long-term missionaries in Niger, West Africa. They are
committed to using their medical skills to relieve physical suffering while actively sharing their faith and discipling faithful men and women. Kendrick and Alicia
are enjoying the opportunity the Lord has given them to work in community health, educating people about hygiene and nutrition and offering hope through
the Gospel.
Lillestrand, Kevin and Amy
The
Lillestrand’s began serving right here at Southwest in 1995. At that time, Kevin had oversight of all college campus ministries in the Portland metro area. He
also gave leadership to our College/Career group from 1995—1997. They now live in Indiana, where they serve on a team that provides leadership to
Campus Crusade student ministries in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Specifically, they give focus to their region’s international missions
effort. They are involved in pioneering new campuses ministries in 12 countries where students have little or no opportunity to hear about Christ, working
with 100 long-term missionaries, 60-75 one-year missionaries and 400-500 students from their US region on short-term projects. Please pray for Kevin and
Amy as their team seeks to shepherd, equip and care for these laborers serving around the world.
Monaco, Bob and Cas
Bob and
Cas have a long legacy of full-time ministry. Their involvement with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) dates back to their college years when they both came to
Christ. They met at a campus meeting where Bob was on CCC staff and Cas was a student. They married and, in 1982, joined CCC staff and served at
University of Utah for three years and then at University of Texas for six years. Following this, they spent three years in Moscow with Russian Campus Ministry
where they ministered to students as well as CCC staff. In 1994, Bob and Cas moved back here and served on staff at SBC as both Associate and Missions
Pastor. During those years, Bob and Cas mentored and shared the gospel with students in the Portland area, partnering SBC with CCC. In 2004, God began
to move in their hearts to draw them back to the ministry of CCC. In January 2005, Bob and Cas returned to their “roots” to work full-time with CCC. In 2009
they moved to Durham, NC to begin working with a ministry of CCC, called Faculty Commons. This is a ministry focused to aiding and resourcing professors in
their ability to reach students for Christ. Their mission statement is “every student, every professor, every university”. Part of their job is to shepherd the 90
Faculty Commons staff, as well as resource them in the best way possible so that they’re equipped to reach faculty. They hope to launch a Faculty Ministry at
NC Central in early 2010.
Morokhovets, Yuri and Svetlana
Yuri
is the president of Primorsky Association of Missionary Churches of Evangelical Christians (PAMCEC) in East Russia. His role includes coordinating missionary
work in the Primorsky territory, managing evangelism and outreaches, and training new missionaries and pastors through different programs. Yuri and his
family moved to Vladivostok in 1994 to begin serving the Primorsky region with the missionary organization “Hope to the People.” Yuri was elected
president of PAMCEC in 1997. SBC became involved in PAMCEC through Spassk Bible Church (a SBC church-plant in far east Russia) when it joined PAMCEC
in order to continue meeting legally and own property. Through Spassk Bible Church, John Corey met Yuri and has been mentoring him and PAMCEC. SBC has
sent various lay leaders and pastors to teach seminars and has also sent short-term teams to join with PAMCEC to staff English camps.
Murray, Joe & Shelby
Joe began
following Jesus during his junior year in college at OSU. He spent the rest of his college experience heavily involved in leading small group Bible studies and
sharing his faith whenever he could. By the end of his senior year, he realized God was calling him to serve in full-time ministry. Shelby (daughter of Scott &
Nancy Edmonds) was in middle school when she began to realize that Jesus wanted to be her Savior and Lord. In 2002, Joe and Shelby met and married and
soon after began working full-time as campus ministers with Real Life Ministries (a ministry of Calvary Chapel) at OSU. Today, Joe and Shelby work for Every
Ethne, a ministry of the US Center for World Mission (USCWM). Their job is to multiply, disciple and mentor students in world missions. They desire to engage,
equip and connect college students to strategic involvement in God’s Biblical purpose to bless all people groups through His Son Jesus Christ. Their vision is to
see God ignite a movement of college students who are consumed with a vision and passion to see every ethnic people group reached with the good news of
Jesus Christ in this generation.
Smith, Jeremy and Andrea
Jeremy and Andrea met in college
and married in August of 1994. Jeremy completed his theological training at the Master’s Seminary in the spring of 2001. Shortly after graduation they were invited by a church in India
to help establish a seminary to train indigenous pastors. The following October they were sent out by Grace Ministries International to Pune, India to help start the Pastoral Training
Seminary (PTS). In June of 2002, PTS held its first classes. PTS offers a three year, full-time, MDiv level course of study, which is designed to equip a man’s heart and mind with the
necessary knowledge and skills to plant and pastor churches. PTS places a strong emphasis on equipping students with the skills to accurately and powerfully preach God’s Word
expositionally. Their goal is to train up godly Indian men who will shepherd the churches in India.
Williams, Paul and Linda
In 1981, Paul and Linda were sent out
from Southwest to begin their assignment with Wycliffe Bible Translators among the Bribri Indians of Costa Rica. Little did they know they would be there for the next 25 years. During
that time, the Lord blessed them with five children, the completion of the Bribri New Testament and many deep friendships with fellow ex-patriots, Costa Ricans and Bribris. After
completing the text of the translation they moved back to Oregon in August 2006 and Paul continued to finalize details for the New Testament’s publication. He also participated in the
audio recording of the New Testament. In August of 2007 they presented the New Testament for the first time to the Bribri people at a dedication service alongside many friends,
family and Bribri. Since then, Paul has continued to travel to Costa Rica occasionally to help promote literacy and the use of the translation. Paul’s new assignment with Wycliffe is to
join a team that is producing verse-by-verse Bible translation guides in Spanish for each book of the Bible. These guides will be an important part of fulfilling Wycliffe’s vision to begin
translation projects in all of the remaining 2,250 languages by 2025.
